Showers likely today but it’s a hot and humid week ahead

Gurgaon: The city is likely to experience hot and humid conditions from Wednesday. Though light showers are expected on Tuesday, the city may not witness wet spells from June 22 till June 27, according to the Met department.
On Monday, the maximum temperature in the city climbed to 31.2°C, from 28.8°C on Sunday. Still, the daytime temperature was eight notches below the season’s normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.5°C, five notches below the normal. The relative humidity index oscillated between 78% and 89%.
“Due to continuous rainfall in the past few days across the state, we have recorded a significant drop in temperature. However, rain activities are likely to reduce in the next 24 hours with a possibility of scattered showers at a few places on Tuesday. There will be no major change in the maximum temperature in the next 24 hours. However, there will be a rise by 2-4°C. High temperatures coupled with humidity will increase the discomfort level,” said Manmohan Singh, IMD director, Chandigarh.
Till June 20, the city received a cumulative rainfall of 24.7 mm as compared to normal of 21.3 mm. The weatherman also said monsoon is likely to hit the state by June 30.
According to the forecast, there will be partly cloudy skies on Tuesday with a possibility of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be between 24°C and 30°C.
The city’s air quality deteriorated on Monday and slipped to ‘moderate’ after witnessing a ‘satisfactory’ air day on Sunday. The overall AQI was recorded at 122.
Meanwhile, with Delhi not receiving any pre-monsoon showers on Monday, maximum temperature increased by over two degrees. However, IMD has issued an alert for Tuesday when light rain is likely to hit the city.
According to IMD, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 32.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, six notches below the season’s average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 23.6 degrees Celsius, five notches below the season’s average. The humidity levels oscillated between 61% and 80%.
According to the weather department, the maximum and minimum temperatures on Tuesday are likely to hover around 32 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.
“The current easterly component of the wind direction in the city is set to change to westerly, which are dry and warm winds, from June 21. The maximum may touch 40 degrees Celsius by June 26-27, which is also the average or normal date when the arrival of south-west monsoon is expected in Delhi,” explained Mahesh Palawat, vice-chairman, meteorology and climate change, Skymet.
