Global City to be developed as key NCR business hub: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar

Gurgaon: The state government’s ambitious Global City project will be developed as a central business district in NCR, and for this, a conclave is likely to be held in Dubai to observe the best global practices for developing a futuristic commercial hub, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Wednesday.
Khattar, who is on a two-day visit to the city, and deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala on Wednesday presided over a round-table conference with industry leaders to hold consultations to develop an ‘iconic futuristic city’ under the Global City project.
This was the third such conference on the project in the past two months. In Wednesday’s meeting, leading realtors submitted suggestions on the mix of commercial, residential, and institutional amenities and services that can be developed under the project. They suggested the development of parks, community and health centres and retail complexes in the city.
Global City, envisioned by the state government as a ‘futuristic city within a city’, was announced in its current form in 2021. It will be developed over 1,000 acres of land in sectors 36, 36B, 37 and 37B along the Dwarka Expressway near Manesar.
The CM noted that since this is one of the largest such projects undertaken in public and private partnership, the government intends to develop the city based on the existing need of the stakeholders and not existing norms.
“We will develop Global City as a central business district in NCR. This project has been pending since 2012, but we wish to complete it earnestly and create an iconic city that resonates with the infrastructural and commercial expansion of Gurgaon. In the conference, we received some valuable suggestions from leading realtors about the amenities and servicesthat can be included,” Khattar said.
The CM further noted that the government is also contemplating holding a similar conclave in Dubai to observe and learn from the best global practices that can be replicated here.
Besides the design part, the government also intends to weigh its options for making the project sustainable. “For this, we may hold meetings and discussions with industry leaders in countries like Singapore or Japan,” noted deputy CM Dushyant Chautala.
According to the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC), which is spearheading the planning and execution of the project, the consultations aim to incorporate the demands of stakeholders, the essentials of developing such a city, and best practices. “If all goes as per the plan, the project may hit the floors around August or September this year,” said a senior HSIIDC official.
Industrialists welcomed the move. “Gurgaon needs a dedicated commercial hub like this. Its location is also very strategically planned. But there are challenges of traffic management, power infrastructure, drainage and policy support. For industries to choose Gurgaon over other cities, the government needs to put these things in order,” said Gurgaon Industrial Association president JN Mangla.
