Gurugram: Garbage being dumped in vacant plots illegally, ‘no action by MCG’

GURUGRAM: Residents of Sector 9A have alleged that vacant plots in the area have become dumpsites as the civic body is not taking initiative to clear municipal and construction waste being dumped there illegally. They also said there is an overgrowth of congress grass on these vacant plots, which provide a breeding ground for rodents, insects and snakes.
This, they said, is posing health hazards. Sandeep Nain, a resident, said that nearly every vacant plot is in the same condition.
“The entire sector is in poor condition, with an overgrowth of congress grass and dumping of waste in vacant plots. There has been no cleaning of these areas by MCG. It at least used to remove the congress
grass in the past. However, the invasive species is now spread wild on the unoccupied areas and roadsides, hampering sanitation and posing a health hazard. It is scary to cross these areas, especially at night, because of the swarming insects and reptiles.”
Residents pointed out that some of the vacant plots were either not developed by the owners or have not been auctioned for several years by Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran. While HSVP imposes extension fees for the delay in construction, no measure is in place to ensure plots are maintained.
MCG and HSVP are now passing the buck, residents alleged. “We have been complaining about the vacant plots for the past six months, asking the authorities to remove the waste dumped there. However, all our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The MCG sanitation team is not doing anything. The number of sweepers is half of what the civic
body claims on paper. We urge the MCG commissioner and vigilance team to take action,” said Lalit Suraj Bhola, the RWA general secretary.
MCG senior sanitary inspector Rishi Malik said that solid waste gets cleared regularly. “But we have some difficulty clearing the plots with boundary walls and fencing. The responsibility for clearing
the C&D and horticulture waste lies with other departments,” he said.
