Gurugram sees first Covid fatality after 2 months

GURUGRAM: The city has recorded its first Covid-19 fatality after a gap of two months, taking the toll due to the viral disease since the outbreak of the pandemic to 1,008. Eighty-one people have succumbed to the infection this year alone.
On Wednesday, a 79-year-old man, who was admitted to a private hospital with headache, fever, loss of appetite, nausea and shortness of breath, tested positive for the infection on May 1. The man was fully vaccinated and was not known to have any comorbidity.
The city had last reported a fatality due to Covid on March 12 when a 69-year-old person with comorbidities had succumbed at a private hospital.
While Covid had struck the city in March 2020, the first death related to the infection was reported in May — four persons had died that month. The highest number of deaths, however, was reported during the height of the second wave of the pandemic in May next year, when 343 Covid patients died. There were 112 fatalities in the preceding month (April), while June saw 85 fatalities. In July, there were 18 deaths, followed by three in August.
Through September and October 2021, when cases had declined considerably, Gurugram did not report any Covid deaths. The city again reported Covid deaths in November that year — two each in November and December. This year, 81 people have died due to Covid so far.
On Wednesday, fewer than 300 Covid cases were reported in the city for the third consecutive day as 279 people tested positive for the infection in the past 24 hours. At present, Gurugram has 1,401 active cases.
With a dip in cases, the daily positivity rate also declined to 7.9% on Wednesday from 8.1% recorded a day back. Hospitalisations, too, continue to be very low. According to data from the health department, 20 Covid patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals.
“Though positivity rate is below 10% for the last three days and cases are on the decline, we are vigilant and keeping a close watch on the health conditions of people who are in home isolation to prevent fatalities,” Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer of Gurgaon, said.
