MCG gears up for monsoon, builds stormwater drains

Gurgaon: The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has started constructing new drains and desilting work to prevent waterlogging this monsoon. It is spending an estimated Rs 16 crore for building a stormwater drain in Laxman Vihar and Rs 1.28 crore for a nullah near the Bajghera flyover.
At a recent meeting, the civic body also proposed digging work to make a kutcha drain at Laxman Vihar to channelise run-off water and prevent flooding in case the concrete stormwater drain is not ready before the monsoon.
“We have started preparations to tackle waterlogging like the construction of a drain in Laxman Vihar. While it will take time to complete, we can dig a kutcha drain that can divert water and prevent waterlogging in the area. For Sheetla Mata Road, where waterlogging is a major problem, we have directly given eight connections to leg 2 (of the drainage network) to divert run-off water from the road,” said MCG superintendent engineer Vivek Gill.
MCG is currently working on 97 projects to tackle waterlogging. These include desilting of stormwater drains and creeks, installing machinery for pumping out water from waterlogging-prone areas, creating check dams, cleaning rainwater harvesting systems and completing ongoing stormwater channel projects.
The civic body has set a deadline of June 30 to complete these works.
The additional commissioner and joint commissioners are the nodal officers of their respective zones to monitor monsoon preparedness and ensure the timely completion of these pre-monsoon infrastructure works.
Meanwhile, MCG officials said, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would clean all surface drains along the Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk and Signature Tower before the monsoon.
Like every year, MCG has prepared a list of flood-prone areas in the city this year and identified the infrastructure requirement at these sites. The ongoing projects will provide relief from waterlogging in these areas. Additionally, the civic body will coordinate with other agencies to ensure monsoon preparedness in different parts of the city.
