Rajiv Chowk-Badshapur section of Sohna elevated road to be ready by June end

Gurgaon: Commuting between Gurgaon and Sohna is likely to become much easier soon, with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revealing that work on the remaining portion of the Sohna elevated road is on track to be completed by the end of June.
Package 2 of the project — between Badshapur and Sohna — was opened to commuters in April this year. Package 1, which links Rajiv Chowk to Badshapur, is also on track to be ready next month. Officials said most work on the section is complete, with the tasks on the elevated portion already done and only bituminous work and finishing touches remaining.
“Around 90% of work on Package 1 has already been completed, and although it will take until the end of next month, the section will definitely be opened to commuters in June itself,” said a senior NHAI official. “The elevation work has been completed and the slab has also been placed. Bituminous work on some portions is left. Once this is done, just the finishing works such as making central line markings and other road markings will remain,” the official added.
Asked whether the monsoon season is likely to affect the project’s ability to meet the deadline, officials said, “By that point, most of the work will already be completed, so rainfall will not impact the opening.”
Conceptualised as a project that would reduce the travel time between Gurgaon and Rajasthan’s Alwar via Sohna from the current three hours to less than two hours, work on the Sohna elevated road had started in 2018, with an initial deadline of 25 months.
The project was to be executed in two packages, with the 9km Package 1 costing Rs 690 crore, and the 12km Package 2 costing Rs 607 crore.
The elevated road is meant to provide signal-free travel, allowing commuters to avoid several busy intersections, including Vatika Chowk. Apart from the entry and exit points at Rajiv Chowk and Sohna, the stretch will have only one more such point, at the toll plaza near Ghamroj village.
The elevated road will also be connected to the Delhi-Mumbai expressway, which will link the two metropolitan centres via Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The 1,380km corridor, being constructed at a cost of Rs 98,000 crore, is expected to be ready by March next year.
Work on the elevated road has been repeatedly held up due to various factors ranging from delays in shifting utilities, bans on construction due to high pollution levels, and the coronavirus pandemic. The collapse of a 40m span of the elevated road near Vipul Greens in August 2020 further complicated matters.
An immediate probe by NHAI into the matter had found that safety norms were not being followed at the construction site. The contractor was directed to suspend work until these arrangements were made. A fine of Rs 50,000 was also imposed on the contractor for each day the work was suspended. Construction resumed only a month later.
A conclusive report of a longer investigation into the matter, which involved several rounds of ground inspections and tests, meanwhile, led to a penalty of Rs 3 crore being imposed on the contractor, with officials blaming a “combination of events” for the mishap, including lapses in placing girders (large metal beams) and other structures.
