Mercury crosses 40°C again, to go up further

Gurgaon: The city’s maximum temperature again breached the 40 degrees Celsius mark on Saturday after witnessing relatively moderate temperature in the past two days due to light rains and thunderstorms.
It stood at 41.5 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal, compared to 38.7 degrees on Friday and 37.2 degrees on Thursday.
On Saturday, the minimum temperature was 25.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above the normal. While Sunday is likely to remain clear and sunny, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the return of heatwaves from Monday. A yellow alert has also been issued for the city. Gurgaon has witnessed four spells of heatwaves so far this year.
“There will be a gradual rise in the maximum temperature by 2-4 degrees Celsius over most parts of state in the next three days. As a result, heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of south Haryana, including Gurgaon and Faridabad, between May 9 and 11,” said Manmohan Singh, director of IMD Chandigarh. He added a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from the night of May 11, which may cause some fluctuation in temperature in east Haryana but no significant change in southern parts of the state.
According to the IMD’s weekly forecast, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in the next six days.
Meanwhile, the city’s air quality improved to ‘moderate’ on Saturday. The overall AQI reading was at 187, compared to 334 a day earlier.
The national capital saw a slight rise in mercury on Saturday even as the respite from heatwave continued. The daytime temperature crossed 41 degrees Celsius mark in a few areas. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, was recorded at 39.4 degrees Celsius as against 38.4 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum temperature was 23.8 degrees Celsius.
