Haryana: IAF squadron leader arrested on charges of dowry death

AMBALA: The police on Tuesday arrested a squadron leader of the Indian Air Force after his wife, a lieutenant allegedly committed suicide at her Ambala residence.
Ambala Cantonment deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Ram Kumar said that the arrested accused has been identified as Navneet Sharma, who is posted in Ambala.
DSP said that accused would be produced before the court on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Sakshi (29) of Shyam Nagar in Delhi, who is survived by a son Divyansh (about two-years-old).
On the complaint of Sakshi’s brother Saurabh, the police registered a case against Navneet Sharma, his mother Lakshmi Sharma, father Chetram Sharma and brother Mohit Sharma, all residents of Pinjore in Panchkula under Section 304-B (dowry death) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Ambala Cantonment police station on Monday.
Saurabh told the police that his sister Sakshi married Navneet Sharma on December 12, 2018.
“The marriage of Sakshi and Navneet was an inter-caste one and our family had given the dowry as per our status. Just a day after the marriage, Navneet and his mother Lakshmi started saying that they were given less dowry. About one-and-a-half year ago, Sakshi, who was deputed at Ambala, delivered a baby boy. Her in-laws started living with her in Ambala and they used to harass and abuse her on small issues,” said Saurabh.
“On June 16, Sakshi called my father and told him that Navneet wants his son be given to his grandparents but she wanted to keep him. Sakshi had told that her in-laws wanted to give Divyansh to Navneet’s sister, who had two daughters. They were torturing her for this issue”, alleged Saurabh.
“On June 20, we called Navneet’s parents and asked them that he had been torturing Sakshi from last about 20 days. They said Navneet does not listen to them. During the call, we also heard that Sakshi was shouting for divorce and they disconnected the call abruptly. Sakshi again called my father and said it has become hard for her to live there. She had said that she would be coming to Delhi with Divyansh,” said Saurabh.
“On June 21 at about 6.50am, Navneet’s mother called us to inform that Sakshi has committed suicide. Navneet had blocked our contact numbers and did not talk to us. I called Navneet from my wife’s phone. He asked us to reach Ambala. Navneet had installed CCTV cameras even in his bedroom and used to threaten my sister of divorce. Sakshi ended her life by hanging after harassments by her in-laws,” said Saurabh to the police.
“Accused Navneet has been arrested and his family has also been also booked. The investigation is going on and more arrests would be made as per the evidence. The post-mortem of the deceased was conducted on Tuesday and her body has been handed over to the family members for last rites,” said DSP Ram Kumar.
