Ambience underpass launch delayed again

Gurgaon: The inauguration of the much-awaited U-turn underpass on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway near Ambience Mall has been further delayed by a month due to waterlogging of the stretch. The underpass is now likely to be made operational by September 30, officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said. It was earlier expected to be opened for traffic on or by August 15.
NHAI officials said the finishing work of the underpass had been delayed due to the rains and subsequent waterlogging. In a recent letter to NHAI, the contractor and the consultant had informed NHAI that over 99% of the work was complete and it would take another three weeks to wind up the final-stage work like black-topping, painting, cleaning and installation of signboards, among others.
The contractor had sought an extension and said the underpass will be ready for inauguration latest by September 30. “The project contractor was not able to complete final-stage work in the past few weeks because of the rains. The underpass is almost complete and if the weather conditions remain favourable, we are expecting the underpass to be open for traffic by September end. But we have also asked the contractor to expedite work and try to hand over the underpass for inauguration before this deadline,” said a senior NHAI official.
According to the project contractor, the construction work was over in July and they were expecting to hand over the project by mid-August. The rains, however, played spoilsport and delayed the final touch-up work.
“The underpass is ready and we too want to throw it open for the traffic at the earliest. But for projects like this underpass, rains are a curse. We cannot do anything but wait until the water recedes and it’s safe to work,” said an official of RK Contractor, the project.
The underpass is part of a project aimed at not only decongesting the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, but also helping commuters reach Ambience Mall without crossing the Delhi-Gurgaon border near Sirhaul toll plaza. The first part of the project was Shankar Chowk flyover, which was opened for traffic last year. Work on the underpass, however, had been lagging due to delay in the shifting of three toll gates and other utilities.
