Move to expand GMDA jurisdiction put on hold

Gurgaon: The proposal to expand the jurisdiction of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to include all parts of Gurgaon district has been put on hold, with officials citing the need for “additional manpower, resources, and funds” as the main reason behind the move.
It was at the sixth authority meeting of the GMDA, in March 2020, that the issue of extending its area to make it coterminous with Gurgaon district had first come up.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who is also the chairman of GMDA, had subsequently directed that the matter be “carefully considered” by forming a committee under the chairmanship of the GMDA chief executive officer (CEO) to look into the matter. He had also directed officials to consult “people’s representatives” while undertaking the task.
Following these directions, a committee had been formed which, in March last year, issued a public notice inviting inputs from residents and other stakeholders on the matter.
“It was found that additional manpower, resources, and funds would be needed if the area was to be extended and the GMDA would have to develop additional facilities in the added area, while also maintaining its existing facilities. In addition, it was also felt that, as of now, there is sufficient area that needs to be developed and it is better to focus on that,” said a senior GMDA official.
