Worried parents meet Haryana minister, appeal to bring their kin to India from Ukraine

YAMUNANAGAR: A group of 14 families, residents of Ambala and Yamunanagar districts in Haryana, parents of Indian nationals studying in Ukraine met the state education minister Kanwar Pal at his residence in Jagadhri town on Thursday.
In view of the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Russia, the worried parents appealed to the minister to help in bringing their kin to India by any means from the war-torn country.
Education minister Kanwar Pal assured the parents of Indian students belonging to Haryana that the state government under the leadership of Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, is already working in close coordination with the Union ministry of external affairs, to find a passage to bring back the Indian residents stranded in Ukraine, which is under martial law.
The parents who met the Haryana minister told him that over 18,000 Indian medical students are stuck in Ukraine, the country which is now under attack from Russia. This has increased the anxiety of parents back in India.
The parents said some of the children have managed to come back to India safely while a large number of them are still stuck as the flights have been closed.
Haryana’s Meham MLA from Rohtak tweeted on Thursday, “About 20 thousand of our citizens are stuck in #Ukraine, of which, more than 2,000 are Haryanvi (Haryana residents) students. I humbly request @PMOIndia and @cmohry to take concrete steps at the earliest to ensure the safe return of all Indian citizens and students.”
After meeting the parents, minister Kanwar Pal said, “I have assured them (parents) about immediately talking to the chief minister and sending the list of names of students via email to his office. We will also contact the Union minister of external affairs and (Ambala) member of Parliament Rattan Lal Kataria and request will be made to immediately make arrangements for the same (rescuing Indians stuck in Ukraine).”
“We are hopeful that the external affairs minister is already making efforts in this direction as we are in agreement with different foreign countries. There must be a way through which the children can be rescued (from Ukraine) like they can travel to a neighbouring country via road and then lifted by air. Every possibility will be explored”, said Kanwar Pal.
When asked about the number of Indians or Haryana residents stuck in Ukraine, Kanwar said, “So far, we do not have any information on this and we just met the parents. As per my information, the number of students is very big who are doing medical studies from Ukraine.”
Shiv Kumar from Bhukhri village in Yamunanagar district said, “Our daughter Indu Kamboj had gone to study MBBS in Ukraine. The present situation there has become very worrisome and the children are extremely tense. They want help from the (Indian) government to rescue them. Upon talking to our daughter on a phone call, we heard sounds of crying and shouting from behind and the children are scared and afraid in Ukraine. The children raised the issues with all concerned authorities over there but did not receive a helpful response yet. I feel that our child is not safe.”
Another parent of Yamunanagar said, “My son is in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine for the last four years. We have requested the Haryana education minister to bring our children to India at the earliest so that they can reach back home safely. The minister has assured us that the government of India will help us. But for us parents, this is an issue of anxiety. When talked to the Indian embassy, they replied that the matter is not getting resolved appropriately. The children are panicked following the developments that took place today (on Thursday). A bomb has also been dropped in Ivano, where our children are. Missiles were dropped in all states in Ukraine and the children have panicked due to it.”
To a query about having a conversation with their kin, a parent said, “They are worried and making efforts to withdraw cash from ATM so that in case of emergency they have money in hand. They are requesting us to press the Indian government. Hardly 1,000 to 1,500 children have come back to India while the rest are stuck in Ukraine. As per our information, over 18,000 are Indian medical students in Ukraine.”
