Revamp of City Centre junction not over, wait for 1 more mth

Gurgaon: Commuters will have to wait for another month for the Huda City Centre junction to be opened to them. According to Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials, although the two main structures — an underpass and a flyover — are complete, some bituminous road work and tasks such as plantation and construction of footpaths are remaining.
The latest deadline set for the project was February 10. The work, GMDA officials said, was delayed due to rain over the last one month, as well as the “cold season”, because of which bituminous work could not be completed. By the end of March, the entire project will be completed and opened to commuters, officials said.
According to the plan for the junction, GMDA is supposed to construct a 705m-long unidirectional underpass for vehicles moving from the Signature Towers side towards Subhash Chowk, and a 269.5m-long bidirectional flyover between Hussain Marg and the road towards Signature Towers.
In addition, two foot overbridges (FOBs) are also supposed to be set up at the intersection —one on the road towards Signature Towers and the other on the road towards IFFCO Chowk.
“Over the last one month, we had a number of splashes of rain because of which there has been some delay in work. In addition, we could not carry out bituminous work because of the cold season. The flyover and underpass are both complete. Only bituminous work and some miscellaneous work like plantation and creation of footpaths are remaining,” said a senior GMDA official.
“It will take around one month for us to complete all work. The FOBs will also be installed in this period. Work will be completed and the project will be commissioned in March,” the official added.
Work on the Rs 43.07 crore project had started in July 2019, with an initial deadline of 12 months for its completion. However, construction has been repeatedly delayed by the lockdown imposed amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the shortage of labor that followed, repeated bans imposed on construction due to high pollution levels, as well as complications in shifting of some utilities for the project itself.
Although, until November last year, GMDA officials were hopeful of completing the project by December 31, 2021, this deadline was revised to February 10 in January following the imposition of a month-long ban on construction across the National Capital Region (NCR).
