Parked car & went shopping, valuables worth Rs 10 lakh stolen in Gurugram

GURUGRAM: The ‘thak thak’ gang has struck the city again, this time making away with cash and jewellery worth around Rs 10 lakh from two different cars. Police said members of the gang broke the windowpanes of the cars and fled with the valuables kept inside in both cases.
The gang has become active in Gurugram in the past three months. Before this, the gang was operating in Gurugram in mid-2018, and police had arrested dozens of its members.
According to cops, the gang targets vehicles parked in markets and streets. In case someone is sitting inside, they divert the commuter’s attention with different tricks and steal bags from the car, an officer said.
Rohit Sharma, a resident of Aravalli Homes in Sohna, had gone shopping with his family to Sadar Bazaar in his car, a Maruti Ciaz, on Sunday. When they returned to the car, they found the rear window broken and the door open. Two trolley bags that contained new clothes, a laptop, a mobile phone and gold jewellery worth around Rs 5 lakh were missing. The total value of the stolen items was around Rs 6-7 lakh, he told police.
“They broke the car window and stole valuables in broad daylight,” Sharma said. Based on his complaint, a case was registered under Section 380 (theft) at City police station on Monday.
In another case, Chetan Singh, a resident of New Palam Vihar, went to Central Plaza Mall with his wife on Sunday. The couple parked the car in front of the mall around 1pm and went shopping inside. They returned an hour later to find one of the windows of the car broken. The valuables kept inside, which included a laptop, one gold chain, one gold mangalsutra and a branded handbag, as well as cash amounting to Rs 5,500, were missing. After Singh filed a complaint, an FIR was registered under Section 379 (theft) of IPC at Sector 53 police station on Monday.
Incidents like these have become a regular occurrence in Gurugram in the past couple of months, police said. “The gang members had stopped coming to Gurugram after 2018, but now they have again become active. After a crime, the gang member does not visit Gurugram for weeks to avoid detection, and others are sent. Our teams are working to track them,” said ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan.
Most of the members belong to Tamil Nadu and are based in Delhi’s Mandangiri, coming to Gurugram from the capital by car for recces, according to police.
