After toll stir, calls grow for entry, exit points
Gurgaon: The under-construction Sohna elevated road, which is aimed at reducing travel time and easing congestion on Sohna Road, is facing opposition from people living in the colonies on both sides of the road in Gurgaon. Residents said due to a lack of sufficient entry and exit points to the elevated road, the service roads between Rajiv Chowk and Vatika Chowk are choked with traffic, defeating the purpose of the stretch.
Residents living in sectors and societies developed along the Sohna Road and villages like Islampur and Tikli approached the deputy commissioner on Tuesday seeking several entry and exit points to the elevated road. With only one entry point in the area at Rajiv Chowk, the elevated road will be of no use for people living in societies along the road and on SPR and Golf Course Road, they said.
Apart from Rajiv Chowk and Sohna, the road has only a single entry point — at Ghamroj toll. The setting up of the toll plaza at Ghamroj is already facing opposition from 30 villages and residents of Sohna City.
Kuldeep Yadav, councillor of ward 29, said the elevated road passes through his ward. “With the construction of elevated road, the service road near Islampur has become narrow and is now permanently choked with traffic,” said Yadav, who took a delegation of residents to meet the deputy commissioner.
Manoj Sharma, a resident of sector 48, said crossing the road has become a challenge now. “After construction of the elevated road, jams in the area have increased,” he said.
Apart from entry/exit points at Subhash Chowk and Vatika Chowk, residents also demanded a U-turn near Sector 48 and a foot-overbridge near Tikli. Deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav assured them that he would take up the issue with NHAI in meeting.
GMDA had written in March to NHAI to plan exit and entry points to the elevated road. A GMDA official said they offered NHAI land for making entry/exit near Vatika Chowk. “It will allow people to exit the elevated road at Vatika Chowk and then take SPR if they are headed towards Golf Course Road. People coming from the Rajiv Chowk side and heading towards SPR and Golf Course Road can also use this highway,” he said.
NHAI officials admitted that the road has limited entry and exit points but claimed that the road was designed as access control for high speed travel. “Access control roads have limited entry and exit points,” an official said.
