Haryana: 20 days on, Ambala farmers continue protest over Rs 83.50-crore sugarcane dues

AMBALA: The sugarcane farmers of the Ambala region have been protesting outside Naraingarh Sugar Mill in Banondi village of Shahzadpur block for their payments for over 20 days.
The sugar mill owes about Rs 83.50 crore for the crushing season of 2021-22 and so far, the mill has cleared the payments up to January 27, 2022.
Starting the crushing season of 2021-22 from November 23, 2021, the Naraingarh sugar mill stopped operations on April 8, 2022. It remained active for 137 days during the season. Out of 137 days, the sugar mill cleared the payment of only 65 days till Wednesday.
As per the information, in the 2021-22 session, the mill crushed about 46.25 lakh quintal sugarcane, which is the lowest in the last 23 years and about 3.75 lakh quintal less as compared to the last season of 2020-21. Accordingly, the mill purchased sugarcane worth about Rs 165 crore.
The farmers have formed a 21-member committee comprising representatives from various farm bodies. The farmers are sitting on protest outside the sugar mill since March 28. During their protest, they held several meetings with the officials of the sugar mill management and district administration.
For their payments, the protesting farmers have also given a call to hold a protest by taking-off their shirts in Naraingarh on April 22.
