As mercury hits record high in Gurugram, brace for more outages

GURUGRAM: April has indeed been the cruellest month for Gurugram. On Friday, the city experienced its hottest April day in weather logs, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the next two days for heatwave conditions.
The maximum temperature soared to 45.9 degrees Celsius on Friday, just a day after it touched another April record of 45.6 degrees Celsius. Before this, the highest in the month was 44.8 degrees on April 28, 1979, according to the IMD.

IMD officials said while 45.9 degrees Celsius was the highest maximum temperature recorded so far for April till now, there could be some inconsistencies as over the years, data had been collected from different observatories across the city. The department started recording Gurugram’s weather data from 1969.
The city is experiencing its fourth spell of heat since the mercury soared into the 40s late last month. Respite from the scorching heat is unlikely this weekend, according to the IMD. The department declares a heatwave if the maximum temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius or more and the departure from normal is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees. A severe heatwave is when the departure is more than 6.4 degrees from the normal.
The prolonged dry spell and anticyclonic wind circulation over Rajasthan and the western parts of the country has resulted in a continuous and intense phase of heatwave in south Haryana this month, officials said.
According to the IMD data, the average maximum temperature till April 29 this year was 42 degrees Celsius, almost six degrees more than the normal average maximum temperature of 36.3 degrees Celsius. The average minimum temperature was 23.6 degrees, against the normal mean minimum temperature of 19 degrees.
“At 45.9 degrees, this is the highest maximum temperature this season and according to the available data, it is also the highest in the month of April. A prolonged dry spell due to a weak western disturbance or limited impact on the northern side is the main reason for continuous intense heat. Another reason is the formation of anti-cyclonic circulation, which has caused a change in wind pattern to south-westerly winds. Warm air from the Rajasthan region is leading to a rise in temperature in Haryana, especially southern parts of the state,” said Manmohan Singh, director, IMD Chandigarh.
Under the influence of a fresh western disturbance that is expected to hit the region on the night of May 1 (Monday), light rain, thunderstorms and dust storms are likely at isolated places over Haryana on May 2 and 3.
“Many parts of India are already observing their peak summer level temperatures and heatwaves, which usually occur late in May. For the first time ever in recorded history, April’s temperature has crossed 45 degrees Celsius in Gurugram,” said Navdeep Dahiya, an independent meteorologist. For Saturday, the IMD has predicted mainly clear skies with a possibility of strong dust-raising winds during the day. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 26 and 47 degrees Celsius, respectively.
