Temp rises after brief relief, but no heatwave soon
Gurgaon: After a brief respite from heatwave conditions, the mercury level has once again started soaring in the city. The daytime temperature on Friday climbed to 40.4 degrees Celsius — two notches above season’s normal — but significantly up from 35.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
The minimum temperature on Friday was settled at 24 degrees Celsius — three notches above the normal but down from 26.7 degrees Celsius a day before. The relative humidity index oscillated between 41% and 73% throughout the day.
Though there is a rise in daytimes temperature by five degrees from the previous day, it doesn’t not fulfill the criteria of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for declaring heatwave condition.
For IMD to declare heatwave condition, the maximum temperature needs to reach at least 40 degrees or more and departure from normal is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. A severe heatwave is when the departure is more than 6.4 degrees from normal.
Thunder activity along very light showers in some areas of the city on Thursday night was a welcome relief. Mainly clear skies, however, has been predicted for most of the coming days and the temperature is expected to hover around 43 degrees Celsius during the next seven days. According to the IMD, there will be a gradual rise in the temperature by 3-5 degrees over the next few days but the possibility of heatwave is unlikely for the couple of days.
“With the passing of western disturbance, we have witnessed a rise in the temperature across the state but it is within near normal range. The trend is likely to continue for the next few days but gradually. Weather is likely to remain dry and clear as westerlies and northwesterlies winds are likely to prevail, which may range between 20-30 kmph during the day over the next two days,” an IMD official said.
For Saturday, skies will remain clear with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to remain around 25 and 41 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Meanwhile, the city’s air quality index (AQI) improved marginally but remained in the poor category on Friday. The overall AQI reading was at 219 as compared to 258 on Thursday.
