Desilting of drains along Baktawar Rd before rains

Gurgaon: Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to desilt the drains along CH Baktawar Singh Road, notorious for waterlogging every monsoon. The move would ensure an easy ride for commuters on the stretch this rainy season.
According to officials, the “cleaning and desilting” of the drains along the stretch will cost nearly Rs 59.70 lakh. “We have floated a tender inviting bid for the cleaning and desilting of the drains of the sector dividing roads of sectors 38 and 39, 32 and 38, and 32 and 39, which constitute Chaudhary Baktawar Singh Road. The work will be done using a high-power, super-sucker machine and will take nearly two and a half months to complete,” said a senior GMDA official.
If this round of tendering is successful, GMDA can allot the work immediately and should be able to complete the desilting just in time for the monsoon, added the official.
Commuters in the city welcomed the move but doubted whether GMDA could complete the work in time. “The monsoon usually arrives around the end of June. If GMDA takes more than two months to finish the work, it is unlikely that they will finish it before monsoon,” said Aarti Sharma, a resident of Sector 31, who works at a private company located along the stretch.
Located adjacent to NH-8, the CH Baktawar Singh Road runs parallel to Sohna Road, with establishments like Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Medanta The Medicity Hospital, guest houses, offices and shops in its vicinity. The road also serves as the point where vehicles from the directions of Rajiv Chowk, Baktawar Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Huda City Centre, Sohna Road, and Mayfield Gardens intersect.
The road is susceptible to waterlogging because of its location in a low-lying area. However, since a unidirectional underpass was built on the stretch, flooding has become even more common. The shifting of the stormwater drain before constructing the structure was not properly handled, according to GMDA, increasing the chances of waterlogging. Of late, every time there is a spell of heavy rainfall, the road and the underpass get inundated, throwing the traffic out of gear.
