Farmers seek toll-free ride in Haryana, warn of agitation

GURUGRAM: Farmers staging demonstrations at toll plazas across Haryana on Monday threatened to launch a massive agitation on January 2 against the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) if their demand for toll-free movement of their vehicles is not fulfilled.
In Rewari district, the farmers are asking for a permanent facility to get their vehicles exempted from toll fee on the Rohtak-Rewari highway. They have demanded that passes be allotted to vehicles of farmers, farmer organisation members and residents of villages within a 20km area around the Gangayacha plaza.
In Jind too, the farmers didn’t allow vehicles to pay toll today at the Badowal plaza in Narwana town on Monday. The farmers announced that they will continue their dharna until their demands are met and that their vehicles be exempted from paying the toll fee.
“Farmers are demanding that the area under 14km be made free of charge. We have given an offer that farmers residing within 20km radius can get a pass of monthly Rs 258 and travel freely but they are demanding total exemption,” said a toll employee, who did not wish to be named.
Sunil Badowal, a farmer activist of Narwana town, said, “We want to end this highhandedness of toll workers. This tax is a burden on us and in the name of FASTag, they are charging us more money.”
In Hisar as well, farmers staging demonstrations at the Ramayan plaza for free travel said that the toll bears a heavy cost on them as farmers travelling from one village to another village in the vicinity have to pay the charge.
