Panel set up to find measures to ease traffic at Sirhaul toll

Gurgaon: The deputy commissioner (DC) visited the Sirhaul toll plaza on Tuesday to take stock of the traffic situation in the area. Responding to multiple complaints by commuters about traffic jams at the toll during peak office hours, the DC constituted a committee to suggest design changes and other alternatives for reducing the congestion.
After the committee submits its suggestions, the traffic police will conduct a trial to test the efficacy of the measures.
“Traffic congestion at the Sirhaul border has been a persistent problem. Despite the efforts put by the traffic cops, the issue persists. We want to find a lasting solution to this problem. For this, we carried out a detailed inspection today. A committee got constituted, and we’ll soon come up with a solution,” said deputy commissioner Yash Garg.
DCP (traffic) Ravindra Singh Tomar, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, and road safety officers were also present during the site inspection.
According to traffic cops, the jam persists due to the long queues at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) toll gates and the delay in clearing the vehicles.
A traffic policeman further noted that structural issues such as the 21 lanes of the e-way on the Gurgaon side converging into a mere four lanes on the Delhi side also lead to massive vehicular pressure of vehicles coming from Gurgaon.
“Vehicles travelling from Gurgaon to Delhi face the problem because the traffic converges to narrow lanes on the Delhi side. The median can get slightly shifted to address the issue. We can also consider including the service lanes in the main carriageway,” suggested DCP traffic RS Tomar.
According to NHAI, the MCD toll got set up on the expressway after a high court order allowed the civic agency to erect the same for commercial vehicles entering Delhi.
An official noted that if the median gets shifted towards Dhanchari Camp, only an eight-lane carriageway will be available to reach the Rajokri flyover, resulting in jams on that stretch again. “So, shifting the median will not help either,” said the NHAI official, suggesting that other alternatives get discussed.
