Haryana: Social boycott over SC/ST Act complaint, says dalit family

ROHTAK: Ten days after a dalit family in a Rohtak village lodged a complaint against a habital offender from the dominant caste for barging into their house, the parents of the victim on Friday alleged that they are facing a social boycott to pressurise them to withdraw the complaint filed by them under the SC/ ST Act.
The accused, Kuldeep, was arrested on December 7 on a compliant that he had barged into the house of a dalit family in the village with the intention of outraging the modesty of their minor daughter. A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the SC/ST Act was registered at Meham police station and he was sent to judicial custody, said Meham Station House Oofficer Parhalad Singh.
Accused was pardoned on intervention of panchayat
The accused’s family and those siding with them are pressuring us to withdraw the complaint under SC/ST section or else we will have to face social boycott. In the past also the accused had barged into our house with the wrong intention at night but due to the intervention of the village panchayat he was pardoned. On December 7, we caught him red-handed inside our house and handed him to the police station,” the parents of the girl said.
When TOI tried to contact the village sarpanch, her son Happy took the call and refuted claims of any social boycott of the dalit community or attempts to get the family to withdraw the complaint.
Meham SHO Parhalad Singh said the accused has been sent to judicial custody after registration of case under the SC/ST Act. However, he claimed that there is no visible tension in the village.
Sources said the dominating caste members have been pressuring the complainant not to register a case against SC/ST Act as it can cause enmity between both the castes.
