Gurugram: Namaz congregation forced to chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Hindustan Zindabad’

GURUGRAM: A week after chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar promised his government would work on an amicable solution to the row over namaz being offered in public spaces, the protests continued – this time in Udyog Vihar, where those who congregated for Friday prayers were forced to chant “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Hindustan Zindabad” by activists of right-wing outfits. The site where the protests took place is near a designated site for prayers. A purported video of the incident was shared widely on social media.
“The chief minister has said no namaz will be allowed in open areas. It is now the responsibility of the police and the administration to comply with his directions,” said Amit, who was among the group that had come to Udyog Vihar. He added that Friday prayers should be held only at the six places that have been designated for namaz.
Meanwhile, no namaz was offered in Sector 37, which has seen several protests over the issue and has ceased to be a designated site now. Some locals organised a ‘bhandara’ at the spot.
Altaf Ahmad, spokesperson of Gurgaon Muslim Council, said ‘vigilantism’ had taken over the city’s law and order. “Right-wing groups are defining how and where namaz will be offered. The latest incident is just another instance in which vigilantes have forced Muslims to raise ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans,” he said, adding that he did not hold out any hope for police action.
The latest disruption comes just a day after former Rajya Sabha MP and Gurgaon resident Mohammad Adeeb filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking contempt proceedings against the Haryana chief secretary and director general of police for not stopping the protests, citing the apex court’s 2018 directions to states during a hearing on mob violence.
Last Friday, Khattar, who was in the city, had said the practice of offering namaz in the open “will not be tolerated”, but also added that an “amicable solution” would be found and the issue needed to be resolved.
